HİNTLİYAN (Նոր Դպրոց) Alumni  Istanbul’dan dünyanın her tarafına dağılmış Hintliyantzilerimizin ilkokul yıllarında kurmuş oldukları arkadaşlıkları sürdürmek, bağı kopmuş olanların irtibatını sağlamak, hayatta olan değerli öğretmenlerimizin mezunlarla görüşmelerini sağlayıp bir araya gelmeleri için İstanbul’da veya Hintliyantzilerin yoğun bulunduğu yerlerde toplantı veya Barahantes organize etmek, committee kurup organizasyonda görevli kişilerle birlikte çalışmak gibi amaçlarla 2013 yılında Facebook üzerinde bir grup oluşturmuştuk.

This website is mainly for Hintliyantzis but of interest to non-Hintliyantzis who might want to learn about Hintliyan Nor Tbrots, a unique Armenian private elementary school in Istanbul, Turkey.  Following is some information about our founder and about the history of the school, which educated hundreds of young Armenians for many decades, even surviving very turbulent times in the region including World Wars I and II.

Hovannes Hintliyan
1866 – 1950

Hovannes Hintliyan was born in 1866 in the Scutari district of Istanbul.  Early in his life, he had a vision of establishing a new method of teaching the youth, as he had unpleasant experiences in the schools he attended during his early childhood.  He received his secondary education at the prestigious “Berberian Varjaran ” graduating in 1882, with special citations in foreign languages of French, English, and Latin.

Following his graduation, he began his teaching career under the guidance of his mentor Reteos Berberian. First, he taught at “Makrouhian Varjaran” where he also assumed the duty of principal; then at “Holy Cross”, “Tbrotsaser”, “Aramyan”, “Dadyan”, and “Getronagan Varjaran” where he also served as a principal. In the meantime, he published several literary and educational articles and textbooks. He also made several trips to Europe, visiting France, Switzerland, and Belgium.

During these trips, he studied the new teaching methods of famous pedagogues, such as Pestalozzi and Montessori, as well as the philosophy behind the idea of the New School called “Progressive Education” or “L’Ecole Active”, which was being applied in    “ New School Abbotsholme” in England and “L’Ecole des Roches” in Switzerland.

Having experienced difficulties with School Boards during his years in azkayin (public) schools, he distanced himself from the practices of publicly funded institutions and set about developing a student-centered administrative system. Following his resignation from “Getronagan Varjaran” in 1908, he established a school in Istanbul called “Nor Tbrots” (New School) with his friend and colleague Kaloust Malatian. They intended to run this school according to the principles Hintliyan had studied in Europe.

The doors of this new school opened on October 18, 1909 in the Pangalti section of Istanbul. The school started as an all-boys elementary school with both boarding and day students, and started admitting girls in 1925. Mr. Malatian resigned in 1925 leaving Mr. Hintliyan alone with all the responsibilities for the school’s financial as well as curricular obligations.

He continued his work until 1949, when due to the deterioration of his health he was admitted into Sourp Pirgitch Hospital. The 64th Anniversary of his work was commemorated in 1946 with a big celebration organized by his associates and students. Hovannes Hintliyan entered his eternal rest on March 16, 1950, at the age of 84.

As he did not have children of his own, the students were Hovannes Hintliyan’s family and the school his home where he spent all his time, except a couple of hours every weekend when he visited his sister and her family. Hovannes Hintliyan educated several generations of Armenians with an educational method ahead of his time. His motivation was to create men and women of determination with a sense of altruism.

After the death of Mr. Hintliyan, Nor Tbrots continued in operation under the direction of others, but had to close its doors due, in part, to the dwindling Armenian population in Istanbul.    The extraordinary and beloved educator’s name survives today at a school in Armenia. A dilapidated school building was renovated with the financial help of alumni and other donors and was named after him.  It is the only school in Armenia that has a name – rather than merely a number as a public school.

“Nor Tbrots started in 1909 as an Ottoman “idadi” school for boys up to year 11, which would correspond to a high school rather than elementary. 1909 was also the year after the absolute rule of Abdulhamit II ended in 1908 and the relatively free period of the Second Constitutional Period, (2ci Mesrutiyet), began…
My father – Ardavasd Sivaciyan was at the Garabetyan Internasyonal Idadisi and when that school closed down, he transferred to Nor Tbrots.
After the passing of the Tevhid-i Tedrisat  – Unity in Education Law – by the young republic in 1924, Nor Tbrots became an elementary school. Malatyan -the co-founder of Nor Tbrots- left soon after, we were not told as to why.”

Sevan Sivaciyan, May 2021

“Some time ago Oryort Arusyag asked me, “To gather more than my class, to reach out to other classes, to get crowded.” She had confidence that we would work hand in hand to gather more and more Hintliyantzis from all over California, New York, Canada, Istanbul, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy. Our diligent search is continuing … At times we hear from the wives of Hintliyantzis who wish to act as agents for their Hintliyantzi husbands, so I add them to our group: like Janet Gulmezian, Ani Avedisyan Selian, Talin Nazar Ipek, Zagik Demircioglu Gains are happy occasions but – as nature dictates – there will also be losses: just recently we lost Armen Paragamyan and, yesterday, his sister Tamar (Sefer) showed interest to join our group and a new honorary Hintliyantzi wished to be part of us. Alida Peseyan whose father Zaven Peseyan was a 1930 graduate and whose aunts were Mari Peseyan 1932 and Suzan Peseyan 1938.
Sirvart Nalbantian ’39 our oldest Hintliyantzi who attended the barahantes in LA will be so happy to have conversations with Alida Peseyan (ohhh!!! it’s so exciting, maybe this was my calling – constructing love bridges between yesterday and today-).
At this point I want to reassure those who worry with the following thought, “Once we are gone there will be no other generation to keep the legacy of Hintliyan alive.” Well, I trust “the children of Hintliyantzis can inherit the will and continue on carrying LUYS, SER, GYANK mission towards Hayasdan.”
